As some of you know, Keith and Mandy hosted an exchange student during the fall of 2009. In August 2009, we went to the Lincoln airport to pick up a tall, blonde German teenager. It was kind of weird bringing this person back to our home to live for a semester. How do you go about communicating what your life is like and what your days involve, to someone who is trying to understand English? It was a challenge for about 2 days… it was strange for a few weeks and then it was incredible for the next 6 months. Kerstin is one of the best things that has ever happened to us. In 6 short months, she became a huge part of our lives. Our boys now have an older sister and we have a daughter. We learned what it is to step outside of your “comfort zone” and welcome someone else into your family. We shared the good and bad for 6 months and walked away with a treasure.
Our experience was so great that we decided to become more involved with the organization. Mandy has trained and is now a Local Coordinator for Academic Year in America. Her job starts with her finding families in the Lincoln area that are willing to take a leap of faith and host an exchange student into their homes and lives. Would you please take a few minutes and consider if this is something that you are interested in? If not, do you know of someone who would be a great host? Once approved by AYA, we can search the applicants to find the right fit for your family (i.e. tennis, baseball, music, girl or boy). There are a lot of great students just waiting for the right family, we would love to help you find yours. For more information, please contact me by email or phone (435-8650) AYA also has a great webpage at www.academicyear.org with tons of information and student listings. One of them may be your Kerstin 🙂
